Accessorize with technology

Now is the time to spruce up the classroom with all the bells and whistles of technology. With newer computers going into classrooms, older equipment is being used as stand-alone word processors or banner-makers.

PowerPC to the people
Every classroom should have two computers designated to work on our network. They are plugged into the wall jacks in the room. Computers in your room that are not connected to our network are referred to as “stand-alone” computers.

If one of your “network” computers is an older model called the “LC575”, please inform your technology department immediately. You are candidate for an upgrade to a more powerful computer, called the PowerPC 5200. Our goal is to get older equipment off the network as much as possible. These computers may be used as stand-alone machines for word processing or other purposes in the classroom.

Want to print banners?
A limited number of impact printers, called the Image Writer II, are available for printing projects, such as banners. They are being distributed to classrooms that already have stand-alone computers to accommodate them on a first come, first serve basis. Please submit your name and room number to us if you would like to use one of these printers to print banners or other projects.

Tables to go
Several of the additional computer tables we ordered have arrived and are being assigned to rooms with older equipment that has been sitting off to the side or even on the floor. Is your room one of the rooms targeted for a table to accommodate this equipment? Please let the computer department know right away.

The tables will first go to rooms with equipment that must come off the floor or off of student desks. Thereafter, we will target rooms that can utilize some older, stand-alone computers as part of a writing center or typing station.

All padded up
Missing mouse pads? Several classrooms still need mouse pads for computers as a result of obtaining new or additional equipment. If any of your computers are missing mouse pads, please inform the department right away. We are compiling a list of rooms that need the pads so that we may place them in rooms as soon as possible.

Patched and printing

Teachers and students in rooms using iMac’s printing to Epson 740 printers can breathe a sigh of relief! Mr. Walker unearthed the solution to a problem with iMac systems printing to the Epson 740. There is a “patch” available that allows the Epson to work with the iMac’s through our network program, Macintosh Manager.

A computer tech assistant has already gone to ALL classrooms with iMac’s to ensure proper printing from teacher workgroups. If users continue to experience problems related to this printing issue, please submit a complaint form outlining your problem. If the problem affects certain users, please list their names on the form. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during our troubleshooting.
