School rules affect computer privileges

The technology department is pleased to announce that we have resolved most of the problems we face at the start of a new school year. However, this month we just have a few reminders for our teachers and students. One very important thing that we ask teachers stress with their students is that breaking the rules of Roberto Clemente Middle School can negatively affect their right to use computers in the school.

Basic rules for computers include such things as not eating or drinking around the equipment, not piling books and papers on or around the computer tables, and not turning the computers off from the back or unplugging them. However, some lesser-known rules that can lead to revoking of computer privileges include such things as chewing gum, eating in class, and spitting sunflower seeds. Gum, sunflower seeds, spilled drinks, crumbs, and gum or candy wrappers have been a major cause of printer paper jams, computer CD or floppy drive damage, keyboard failures and mouse malfunctions.

Students have also removed balls from computer mice and used them as toys or even weapons. Since possession of any object that could be used as a weapon is a violation of the School District Code of Conduct, this type of abuse should not be taken lightly. The School District is currently implementing an Internet filtering system, but please do not let this filter be a stand-in for careful monitoring and control of Internet usage in the classroom. It is still necessary for you to keep a watchful eye on students as they access the computers.

Please encourage students to take responsibility for the care and keeping of the technology in their classrooms. Technology Department personnel will work with teachers to ensure that the proper course of action is taken on students that damage or destroy the school’s computers, printers, and other equipment and abuse Internet privileges.

E-mail account notice

Staff members with an existing School District e-mail account that has not been used and has been deemed inactive, please contact Gary Brookstein at 215-875-2397 to reactive it. New staff members with no e-mail account, please see Ms. Sara Ortiz to obtain one. Please be reminded that problems with your Mac Manager login information can also be addressed through Ms. Ortiz.

E-mail classes to come!
Look for upcoming e-mail workshops to take place in one of our four computer labs. We are currently using Eudora 5.1 and Outlook Express 5.2 on classroom computers, and the workshops will show teachers how to set up and check their e-mail from within either of these programs.

Technology survey on the way
Please be on the lookout for a Clemente School Technology survey. This survey is being distributed to better help us determine what we need to do to serve you better and what kinds of professional development workshops you would like to see from our department. It would be very helpful and greatly appreciated if you complete and submit this survey to Mrs. Garcia-Thompson.

Student login information

This is just a reminder to teachers that students login with their last name, a comma, space and their first name. Their password is their student identification number. Advisory teachers are responsible for distributing to students their login passwords. Please do not try to login as a guest on classroom computers.
