Holding up to year-end of the deal

Staff and students are a lot alike around this time of year: Everybody’s counting down, and most of us are winding down at the same time. But before you check off all your “done-for-the-school-year” checklist items, please help us help you prepare computers for the summer.

In and out of lock down
Last summer the computer tech assistants went from room to room to tie up computer cables and cords to prevent the cords from becoming a tangled, mangled, shorted out mess in September.

The maintenance staff will be doing a thorough cleaning of the school over the summer, which involves moving the equipment and placing it back when they’re done. We would like to keep the cords and cables out of their way so they can clean your rooms more easily.

This year will be no different. During the weeks of June 10 and 17, computer techs will visit the third and second floors to disconnect all the equipment for the summer. But even before we do that, there are some things we’d like teachers to take care of to help simplify the process. Students can even help with some of these tasks!

Students can, for example, help teachers by cleaning the computers before we begin our lockdown. A simple dollar-store solution will do. Simply spray a scrub rag or brown paper towel with the solution and proceed to wipe down the computers, keyboards, and printers. Please be careful not to wipe off the School District ID tag (white label with red border) or to get any solution inside the equipment in the process.

Teachers are asked to lock up their keyboards and mice, preferably in a closet or file cabinet. This leaves less loose equipment out that can be damaged when tables are moved as rooms are being cleaned.

Over and out
The computer department is also taking some organizational steps toward locking down the computers for the summer. Our complaints database will be closed on June 7th. Once we begin locking up keyboards, mice, and other loose equipment in classrooms, teachers and students will not be able to reconnect them to use computers.

Anyone needing to use computers may schedule time to use either the library or one of our four computer labs. Please see the librarian or lab instructor of the lab you wish to visit to schedule use of that location.

In convenience

First some good news! Our Clemente Tech Newsletter is now available online, a convenience for teachers that don’t want to store a lot of loose papers when they need help with their classroom computers. It is accessible through our Internet and Intranet websites. Read page 2 for details.

In OTHER news, last month we announced a Scholastic update scheduled for classroom computers so that students could be tested in their rooms. We were unable to complete this update due to an emergency with an administrator’s computer.

This update will be completed over the summer and ready for teachers and students in September. We apologize for any inconvenience.

AAAUGH! Don’t move!

If you change classrooms between now and September, it is essential that you do not move computers or other equipment to your new location. The computer department has just completed a detailed inventory of all computers, printers, and other related equipment that have been assigned to classrooms, offices, and computer labs.

All changes in location for assigned equipment must be recorded and entered into a large database. Important serial numbers or school district identification tag numbers must be recorded when these changes are made. The School District from time to time asks us to gather this information and report it to them.
